MLM or network marketing is like running…
Ever participated in a long-distance run? 10 km, 20 km or even a marathon which is 42.195 km?
Can you start running very fast as if you’re sprinting 100 meters?
Of course not! Because you will tire out after several hundred meters…
If you have not run long distance before, how would you approach it?
Here are 7 tips which you can apply to long distance running as much as you can apply to MLM or network marketing:
Tip No. 1 - Take time to learn the basic skills
Believe it or not, you need to learn how to run!
Many years ago, while training for my first marathon, an ex-colleague insisted on running his way, pounding heavily each time he land on his feet. He didn’t heed my advice. On race day, he was the only one who could not complete the race.
You need to learn how to run, what shoes to put on, how to run uphill, etc.
Likewise, in MLM or network marketing, whether you’re doing in online or offline, you need to learn the basic people skills like prospecting, sharing, follow-up, closing, etc before you can become effective.
Tip No. 2 - Be patient with yourself
In training for a long-distance run, you have to allow yourself time to prepare for the race. The longer the run, the more time you need. Typically, I would train for at least 6 months before I run a marathon.
Similarly, in MLM or network marketing, it is absolutely normal to take 3 to 5 years to succeed by building up an enormous leverage over time as your skills become increasingly better.
Tip No. 3 - Be persistent
While training for your long distance run, you have to train hard to increase your stamina and fitness. In MLM or network marketing, you need to expose your opportunity to as many people as possible whether you adopt the online or offline approach.
Tip No. 4 - Practice often to improve your skills
Usually, I put in 4 to 5 practice runs a week to prepare for a full marathon. Anything less will be ineffective towards a good race.
For my MLM or network marketing business, I practise sharing my opportunity with prospects as often as I can and I practically improve each time.
Tip No. 5 - Pacing is most important
As mentioned at the beginning of this article, it is not advisable to sprint during the long distance run except at the end if you still have the energy. It is recommended to pace yourself throughout the run with a certain timing in mind such as 5 or 6 minute per km depending on your fitness.
For your MLM or network marketing business, you would want to meet 2 to 3 people everyday if you’re doing it offline instead of squeezing in 6 to 8 appointments in one day, then not seeing anyone else for the next 3 days! One of my downlines did that before and she almost had a nervous breakdown.
Tip No. 6 - When you’re depressed, talk it out
There might be times that you’re sick of running. That’s the time when you need mutual support from other runners, preferably your partners who are training together for the race.
In MLM or network marketing, talk to your uplines when you’re depressed and feeling down. However, never never never talk to your downlines! You would influence them negatively and before you know it, you will lose your entire leg!
Tip No. 7 - Have an unshakable belief
You must believe without the shadow of a doubt that you can complete the race right from the first step that you take! It is truly a case of mind over matter.
It’s the same with your MLM or network marketing business. Without believing that you WILL surely succeed, you will stop taking action and will end in a negative spiral and soon lose your entire network. You need to believe in yourself, your company, your products and last but not least your team which will provide you with the impetus to take action consistently and work relentlessly towards that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
