Network marketing: Have you got the map into your head?

Not long ago, I went on one of my many driving trips from Singapore - where I live - to Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia four hours away.

As I drove across the border, I realized that in my hurry, I forgotten my bag of maps entirely - which had served me well in the past whenever I got lost somewhere in KL.

Fleeting thoughts haunted my mind to turn back and get that bag of maps in case I get lost in a foreign land. However, I comforted myself that I’ll be able to find my way and decided to continue on with my journey.

Four hours later, I was in KL…

As I already arranged several appointments at various places in the city, I had to rely on my past knowledge of the city in order to find my way around. Thankfully, I had ‘installed’ the KL map into my mind over the last two years:

- by remembering landmarks like prominent buildings

- by analyzing how the myriad number of highways intertwined and led to one another

- by staying at hotels in different parts of the city

- by using different routes to travel from one place to another

Though the map is not the territory, but having the map in mind had helped me to navigate around, to find my bearings though I admit that many a time I still find myself lost in some small roads and areas that I’m not familiar with… which can be a little frightening as it can often take awhile to get back to the main roads and find my direction once again.

Isn’t it the same for your network marketing business?

The network marketing map is all there, laid out on the table for us:

- the company’s history, background, founders, achievements, mission, vision

- the products it carry and distribute

- the compensation plan and how it rewards distributors and affiliates who achieve the most results

- the back office, the support system, the prospecting tools

- the strategies and
how your team functions to support and shorten the learning curve of your new ‘distributor’ business partners

If we had taken the time to ‘install’ the ‘network marketing’ map into our mind, we will be able to move forward in the direction in our success journey. When we meet someone who is looking for a business opportunity, we are fully prepared to share and expose the business opportunity to them confidently so that they would know that we take our business seriously and not just some ‘hobby’ that we try out and see if it works for us…

Having said that, we do get lost along the way. There will be new situations that we do not know how to handle yet, there will be people we have not known how to deal with yet, there will be questions on the products and/or compensation plan that we would not know how to answer yet. But that’s part and parcel of the game.

But still, having the network marketing map in our mind offers the comfort that we are at least prepared to meet most of the challenges that we will face and by learning and growing everyday, we will become better and more knowledgeable and finally become unstoppable in our journey to success.

A map of the network marketing business

Though the map scares the living daylights out of me,

I still took the first step…

Recently, I was supposed to drive from Singapore

(my hometown) to Penang (in Malaysia) some 700

kilometers (437 miles) away to meet a few prospects.

On that morning, I took out my Malaysia map and

opened it. One glance at it … and I immediately got a

horrifying feeling in the pit of my stomach - I had to

drive 10 to 12 hours all by myself!

Frankly, I felt like going on a coach or even hop on a

plane instead and forget about driving at the point

in time!

(But the thought that I’ll lose the convenience of

having a car to drive around while I’m in Malaysia

puts me off and kept me going.)

So far, I’m already very used to driving half that

distance, from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur (in

Malaysia) about 350 kilometers (218 miles). That’s

perfectly manageable now in around 4 hours but

absolutely NOT double that distance!!

******************************

*** Another ‘milestone’ for me ***

******************************

However, I was glad I completed a few half and

full marathons in the earlier years of my life. All I

did was draw from that past successful experience

 - to put one foot in front of the other and keep on

going! So, by remembering those empowering

memories, I took the first step: loaded my luggage

into the trunk of the car and started driving off …

In less than 10 hours, I finally arrived Penang and

then relaxing in the comfort of the hotel room. Yet

another milestone in my life :-)

And I realized that in network marketing, it’s

exactly the same!

Did you know that you already have a map?

******************************

*** Our Network Marketing ‘map’ ***

******************************

In case you’re new, let me describe the network

marketing ‘map’ to you:

1) The network marketing INDUSTRY is already

more than 50 years old and many millionaires and

even billionaires have been created! That shows

that network marketing is real and it’s possible to

achieve the lifestyle we want through this industry.

2) The COMPENSATION PLAN is usually an

extremely powerful pay plan due to its multi-level

nature. I absolutely love the potential that every

of my downline sponsor another few downlines,

creating an exponential growth effect for me.

If you have caught the vision of network marketing

- it’s more than just owning one MacDonald franchise

 - you’re like the MacDosnald’s franchise owner

who started many years ago and now owning tens

of thousands of franchises around the world and

collecting a franchise fee every month … and you

have exactly the same kind of leverage in

network marketing!!

3) The PRODUCTS are awesome, especially in the

case of Success University! This morning, I was just

going through a CD that the company sent to me.

It’s so convenient. I don’t have go out and look for

personal development resources unless I want to.

Personal development is at hand to help us grow

into a person we had to become in order to succeed

now that we have a regular dose of both offline

newsletter, CDs & DVDs and online audio and video

learning courses.

4) The SYSTEM is in place for us - we can share this

business opportunity both online (thru Internet

marketing skills) as well as offline (by sharing with

our family and friends) - to share something good

and succeed by helping others succeed.

It will typically take 2 to 5 years to build a large

enough passive income to allow us to be financially

independent.

******************************

*** If you follow the ‘map’ ***

******************************

By following the above ‘map’, it’s not a question of

whether or not you’ll get there. It’s just like me

looking at the Malaysia map. Never at one moment

did I doubt if I could get to Penang. That’s for sure

because I’m holding a map that is well-charted!

I can’t go wrong by following this map. However,

I know that I can only get there in that 10 to 12 hours,

not 1 to 2 hours. With that right expectation in mind,

all I had to do is to keep driving, take short breaks

in between and continue to drive on towards my

destination after I have rested…

Now that you are fully aware that you have a network

marketing ‘map’, all you need to do is to follow this

map.

But you also now know that we need 2 to 5 years and

can’t get there in 2 to 5 months!

And all you need to do is simply … keep moving

forward everyday and engage yourself in activities

that matter such as talking to prospects, answering

their questions, motivating your downline, building

resources to help them.

In fact, I just recorded an audio for my downlines

this morning …

When people asked me what I do in this business to

succeed, I told them the same - I work on my business

everyday to keep moving forward. Right now, it’s

raining extremely heavily outside where I’m sitting at

Heritage Hotel in Penang. And once the rain subsides,

I will head on to KL to meet more prospects there in

the next few days.

Network Marketing Business

Whenever I think network marketing, it makes me alive!

Though many people are apprehensive about network marketing, for me, it is absolutely the other way round. That’s simply because I know something that many people do not realize…

MLM or network marketing is like running…

Ever participated in a long-distance run? 10 km, 20 km or even a marathon which is 42.195 km?

Can you start running very fast as if you’re sprinting 100 meters?

Of course not! Because you will tire out after several hundred meters…

If you have not run long distance before, how would you approach it?

Here are 7 tips which you can apply to long distance running as much as you can apply to MLM or network marketing:

Tip No. 1 - Take time to learn the basic skills

Believe it or not, you need to learn how to run!

Many years ago, while training for my first marathon, an ex-colleague insisted on running his way, pounding heavily each time he land on his feet. He didn’t heed my advice. On race day, he was the only one who could not complete the race.

You need to learn how to run, what shoes to put on, how to run uphill, etc.

Likewise, in MLM or network marketing, whether you’re doing in online or offline, you need to learn the basic people skills like prospecting, sharing, follow-up, closing, etc before you can become effective.

Tip No. 2 - Be patient with yourself

In training for a long-distance run, you have to allow yourself time to prepare for the race. The longer the run, the more time you need. Typically, I would train for at least 6 months before I run a marathon.

Similarly, in MLM or network marketing, it is absolutely normal to take 3 to 5 years to succeed by building up an enormous leverage over time as your skills become increasingly better.

Tip No. 3 - Be persistent

While training for your long distance run, you have to train hard to increase your stamina and fitness. In MLM or network marketing, you need to expose your opportunity to as many people as possible whether you adopt the online or offline approach.

Tip No. 4 - Practice often to improve your skills

Usually, I put in 4 to 5 practice runs a week to prepare for a full marathon. Anything less will be ineffective towards a good race.

For my MLM or network marketing business, I practise sharing my opportunity with prospects as often as I can and I practically improve each time.

Tip No. 5 - Pacing is most important

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, it is not advisable to sprint during the long distance run except at the end if you still have the energy. It is recommended to pace yourself throughout the run with a certain timing in mind such as 5 or 6 minute per km depending on your fitness.

For your MLM or network marketing business, you would want to meet 2 to 3 people everyday if you’re doing it offline instead of squeezing in 6 to 8 appointments in one day, then not seeing anyone else for the next 3 days! One of my downlines did that before and she almost had a nervous breakdown.

Tip No. 6 - When you’re depressed, talk it out

There might be times that you’re sick of running. That’s the time when you need mutual support from other runners, preferably your partners who are training together for the race.

In MLM or network marketing, talk to your uplines when you’re depressed and feeling down. However, never never never talk to your downlines! You would influence them negatively and before you know it, you will lose your entire leg!

Tip No. 7 - Have an unshakable belief

You must believe without the shadow of a doubt that you can complete the race right from the first step that you take! It is truly a case of mind over matter.

It’s the same with your MLM or network marketing business. Without believing that you WILL surely succeed, you will stop taking action and will end in a negative spiral and soon lose your entire network. You need to believe in yourself, your company, your products and last but not least your team which will provide you with the impetus to take action consistently and work relentlessly towards that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Is MLM or Network Marketing A Scam?

This topic, I believe, has been debated countless number of times, through the last five decades since its conception.

So then, why do I want to discuss this? I’ll get to that in a minute…

First, let’s see why do people think that MLM is a scam. Could these be some possible reasons?

- it’s a pyramid and it’s illegal
- only the people at the top make all the money
- you have to make a financial investment
- there’s no guarantee to earn back
- very few people make money, only few succeed

Really, that’s just a handful that I remember hearing or reading about as I write this.

Now, instead of debunking the myths in a usual manner, let me tell you what caused you to be reading this right:

As I woke up to a brand new day this morning, I reflected upon life itself and realize that there’s absolutely NO guarantee!

I’m not saying this to scare you but the truth is that you might not be reading this if I had not awaken once again to live this day and…wrote this article. One day when I was teaching a computer class, we all had a good laugh when we realized that in life, there are ONLY four guarantees:

- life
- death
- taxes
- computer virus (that’s what we figured out that day!)

Thinking back many years, I was fortunate to attend school with many other fortunate children. (Why I said ‘fortunate’ as I realized that some children NEVER had the chance.) The point here really is: We all started the same.

But now, a few decades later, two of my closest friends have passed away in their twenties and thirties. One of them become a very successful businessman. A few held positions of CEO’s and top management positions. However, a few had become broke and even bankrupt though they were the one’s who excelled in school. And the majority merely held on to their jobs for as long as they can…

It is therefore clear that in life itself, we all take different paths and there’s really NO guarantee of our success and failure, not to mention we have absolutely no control of how long we’ll be on this planet.

Many people joined the same company but ended up at different rungs of the corporate ladder with few ever get promoted all the way to become CEO’s. Many people started their traditional small or big businesses but very few made it to be publicly listed or the Fortune 500. Many people got married with a lot of expectancy on their wedding day but things worked out totally different from what they expected…

So, the BIG question is: Is LIFE a scam?

You may or may not agree with me that MLM or network marketing is a brilliant system of distributing products and services with a powerful compensation plan to reward those who work hard at referring others to use them.

Thus, in my opinion, there’s absolutely no surprise that ONLY few, as in traditional business or even the corporate sector, will ever rise up to earn the highly coveted 6 or even 7-figure incomes that MLM or network marketing promises.

After all, if MLM is not a get-rich-quick scheme, why should everyone succeed - as in life - just by joining an MLM or network marketing business?

My friend, there are visually impaired, some hard of hearing, some still schooling, some who should have retired, some who couldn’t retire - all in my own network. At least I know that MLM or network marketing give them another chance - a second chance in life. To learn, to grow, to excel or even just to win in the game called ‘life’ that they have not given up.

Are you doing prospecting for your network marketing business the right way?

Today, I’ll talk about a simple order of things that most network marketers got the other way round when they do their prospecting, whether online or offline.

Have you ever heard of the three-feet-rule? New distributors are told to share their network marketing opportunity by prospecting anyone within three feet! Talk about cold calling. This is what I call ‘cold calling in person’ or spamming since there is no permission from those people. It’s not much difference from sending out spam mails. More on this later.

Now, think about this…

- Do you run before you can walk?
- Does Summer come before Spring?
- Does the sun rise in the west?
- Can you have a harvest before sowing your seeds?

I recall this from “The greatest networker in the world” where John Milton Fogg advocates:

RELATIONSHIP -> FRIENDSHIP -> PARTNERSHIP -> LEADERSHIP

And as a young friend related to me how he made many friends during orientation in University recently, I encouraged him to continue doing that. Friends come first. Business, joint ventures, partnership can come later.

Then why is it that many network marketers got it the other way round. They keep spamming people with the three-feet-rule as well as spam mails hoping that they will join them in their network marketing business at first sight.

And worst still… when some of their prospects eventually joins, they would not bother to take care or support them but move on to spam others. Thus, before the first batch could stay on for long, the second batch comes in. Then the first batch drops, not knowing what to do. And now the third batch joins, the second batch drops… you get the picture, it’s like trying to stick quick sand on the wall.

All this gives a bad ring to network marketing…

Sad but true. Prospecting the wrong way through spamming, whether online or offline.

It is infinitely easier to follow the greatest network marketer’s advice. That is, to build relationships and make friends first. Business can come later… after you have established trust.

Networking versus Network Marketing

What’s the difference between networking and network marketing?

Years ago when I first started in network marketing, I read a book by a lady from Malaysia who left corporate office to join the multi-level marketing industry. And I always remember what she wrote, though this may not be in her the exact words:

- Did you work hard enough?

- Did you network hard enough?

- Did you think hard enough?

What Is The Meaning Of ‘Network Marketer’?

I thought what she wrote was rather profound and in fact, I often ponder over the meaning of ‘network marketer’ which is made up of two root words: networking and marketing.

Today, let’s discuss the first root word: ‘networking’ which is totally different from network marketing. What’s the difference? More on this later.

I came across many network marketers who do not network due to a lack of knowledge of business networking which can be defined as a group of people having some kind of commercial relationship such as the relationships between boss and employee, buyer and supplier, and colleague and colleague.

Networking experts say that business networking functions best when individuals offer to help others to find connections, rather than just “cold-calling” on prospects.

On the other hand, network marketing in a nutshell refers to the ‘word-of-mouth’ method of marketing products and services through a network of customers or distributors.

If you’re wondering: What has networking got to do with network marketing?

My answer is: A lot.

That’s because each of us has only a limited number of contacts in our warm market which consists of our extended family, relatives, friends, neighbors, ex-classmates and ex-schoolmates, business associates and contacts and colleagues.
So, what can we do when we run out of prospects?

The short answer is: Go and network consistently!

7 Reasons Why Network Marketers Fail

Why do so many network marketers fail?

As complex as we humans are, there are possibly as many reasons why the high failure rate in network marketing as there are stars in the sky. Here, there are seven reasons which probably account for a lot of failures, without any order of importance:

Reason #1 – They do not network enough

Years ago when I first started, I read a book by a lady from Malaysia who left corporate office to multi-level marketing. And I always remember what she wrote, though this may not be in her the exact words:

“Did you work hard enough?
Did you network hard enough?
Did you think hard enough?”

I thought what she wrote was rather profound and in fact, I often ponder over the meaning of ‘network marketer’ which is made up of two root words: networking and marketing.

I came across many network marketers who do not network due to a lack of knowledge of business networking which is defined a

s a group of people having some kind of commercial relationship such as the relationships between boss and employee, buyer and supplier, and colleague and colleague.

Networking experts say that business networking functions best when individuals offer to help others to find connections, rather than just “cold-calling” on prospects.

Reason #2 – They do not understand marketing

Here’s the other root word of the term ‘network marketer’ – marketing.

Network marketers come from all walks of life and many of them are not from sales and marketing background. Thus, they totally do not understand how marketing works.

It is therefore not surprising that many network marketers end up ‘spamming’ others either offline or online.

Reason #3 – They do not take the business seriously

If network marketers take their business as a hobby, and only work on it as and when they like, the business will pay them like a hobby.

On the other hand, those network marketers who take their business seriously are paid handsomely.

Reason #4 – They have no faith

Network marketing is a faith business. In other words, a network marketer needs to believe in himself/herself in order to succeed.

In this case, conventional wisdom of ‘seeing is not believing’ does not apply. One needs to belief first in order to see things happening!

By seeing others who succeeded before them, a network marketer must believe that they can make it too and then start taking action consistently.

Reason #5 – They have no vision

Network marketers need vision to succeed. In other words, a network marketer needs to see the forest, not the trees.

Each activity whether it is prospecting, presenting, training, etc must be seen in the light of moving the business forward rather than disjointed events. Thus, a simple failure or obstacle will not be able to cause a network marketer to quit easily.

Reason #6 – They do not understand that it is a process

Success is a journey. It takes time. No one can become successful overnight.

Thus, network marketers must understand that the process takes time and therefore must invest time to learn, unlearn and relearn in order to become better and better at what they are doing.

Reason #7 – They don’t know enough of how things work

Network marketers do not know how things work and do all the wrong things. For example, they might lack people skills like interpersonal and communication skills and therefore do not know how to prospect and present their opportunities effectively.
